First time boarding your dog? Here's the practical checklist Katy families use to prepare — vaccinations, food, meds, drop-off timing, and how to keep your dog (and yourself) calm.
First-time boarding is usually harder on the human than the dog. The good news: a little preparation covers 90% of the worry. Here's the checklist Katy families use at Circle Lake Ranch to make first stays smooth for both ends of the leash.
1. Book an Assessment Day First (Required for New Dogs)
New dogs complete a one-time 4–10 hour assessment day before their first overnight. It lets our staff evaluate temperament, meet your dog when nobody's stressed, and match them into an appropriate play group. Assessment is $25 for the first dog, $20 for the second, $15 for the third.
Aim to schedule assessment at least a week before your planned trip — not the day before — so you have breathing room if we need to adjust anything.
2. Update Vaccinations Early
All Katy-area boarding facilities should require the same core vaccines. At Circle Lake Ranch we need current:
- Rabies
- DHPP (Distemper / Parvo combination)
- Bordetella (kennel cough) — typically good for 6 or 12 months depending on the vet

3. Pack Their Regular Food (Portioned)
Sudden food changes are the #1 cause of upset stomachs during boarding. Bring your dog's normal food, ideally already portioned into daily bags with your dog's name on each. Include a little extra in case pickup is delayed.
4. Bring Medications in Original Containers
We administer oral medications, ear drops, and eye drops at no extra charge — but we need them in their original vet-labeled containers with clear dosing instructions. Include the vet's contact info in case we have questions mid-stay.
5. Include One Familiar Item
A blanket, worn t-shirt, or favorite toy from home can help nervous dogs settle in on night one. Skip anything you'd be devastated to lose or that could be a choking hazard (rawhide, small squeakers).
6. Practice a "Boring" Drop-Off
Long emotional goodbyes tell your dog something scary is happening. Keep drop-off short, upbeat, and matter-of-fact — hand off the leash, say a normal goodbye, and go. Dogs almost always settle within 10–20 minutes of the human leaving.
Drop-off and pick-up hours at Circle Lake Ranch are 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, seven days a week. Coming during a mid-morning lull is usually calmer than the last hour before close.
7. Skip the "Big Adventure Day" Beforehand
It's tempting to tire your dog out with an epic dog-park session the morning of drop-off. Skip it. An overtired, over-adrenalized dog has a harder time transitioning to a new environment. A normal morning walk is plenty.
8. Set Realistic Expectations for the First Night
Many first-time boarders eat a little less on night one, sleep more the next day, and are back to normal by night two. That's typical, not a red flag. Facilities that pretend every dog is thrilled from minute one aren't being straight with you.
