First-time boarding can be stressful — for you and your dog. This complete checklist covers everything you need to do before dropping off your pup.

Dropping your dog off for boarding for the first time can feel nerve-wracking. Will they be comfortable? Will the staff understand their quirks? Will they eat? These are completely normal concerns — and the good news is that a little preparation goes a long way toward making the experience smooth for everyone.

2-4 Weeks Before: Get the Basics Handled

The most common reason boarding check-ins get delayed is missing paperwork. Handle these items early so drop-off day goes smoothly.

  • Update vaccinations — Rabies, DHPP (Distemper/Parvo), and Bordetella are required at most boarding facilities, including Circle Lake Ranch. Schedule boosters at least 2 weeks before boarding so immunity has time to develop.
  • Schedule an assessment day — Most quality boarding facilities require new dogs to complete an assessment visit. At Circle Lake Ranch, this is a 4-10 hour visit where we evaluate your dog's temperament and social skills.
  • Refill medications — If your dog takes daily medication, make sure you have enough to cover the entire boarding stay plus a few extra days. Original containers are not required at Circle Lake Ranch — send each medication with clear written dosing instructions.
  • Visit the vet — If your dog hasn't had a checkup recently, a pre-boarding wellness visit gives you peace of mind and catches any issues before they become problems at the facility.

1 Week Before: Start Preparing Your Dog

Dogs pick up on routine changes, so gradual preparation is better than last-minute packing.

  • Practice short separations — Leave your dog with a friend or at daycare for a few hours to build their confidence with being apart from you.
  • Maintain normal routines — Don't drastically change feeding times, walk schedules, or sleeping arrangements. Consistency reduces pre-boarding anxiety.
  • Pre-portion food — Bag your dog's meals in individual portions with feeding instructions. We highly recommend that dogs do not change their food right before boarding — bring their regular food from home.
  • Wash a t-shirt and don't fold it — A worn shirt with your scent can comfort anxious dogs during their stay.

What to Pack for Boarding

Packing the right items helps your dog settle in faster. Here's what we recommend bringing — and what to leave at home.

  • ✅ Enough of your dog's regular food for the entire stay (pre-portioned in labeled bags)
  • ✅ Medications with clear written dosing instructions (original containers are not required at Circle Lake Ranch)
  • ✅ A familiar blanket, bed, or worn t-shirt with your scent
  • ✅ Treats, if you like — Circle Lake Ranch asks that you leave toys at home
  • ✅ Written feeding schedule and any special dietary notes
  • ✅ Your vet's contact information for emergencies
  • ❌ Toys and rawhide chews — Circle Lake Ranch does not accept them (choking risk)
  • ❌ Expensive beds or items you'd be upset to lose
  • ❌ Retractable leashes (standard leashes are safer for facility use)

Drop-Off Day: Setting the Right Tone

How you handle drop-off significantly affects how quickly your dog settles in. Dogs are experts at reading our emotions, so your calm confidence matters more than you might think.

  • Exercise your dog before drop-off — A tired dog transitions more easily than a restless one. A 20-30 minute walk or play session works wonders.
  • Keep goodbyes brief and upbeat — Prolonged, emotional goodbyes actually increase your dog's anxiety. A quick pat, a cheerful 'be good!' and a confident walk to the car is ideal.
  • Arrive during normal business hours — At Circle Lake Ranch, drop-off is available daily from 8 AM to 6 PM. Avoid rushing.
  • Let the staff know about any quirks — Does your dog resource-guard food? Dislike having their paws touched? The more information you share, the better we can care for them.

Helping Anxious Dogs Adjust

Some dogs take to boarding immediately, while others need more time. If your dog tends toward anxiety, these strategies can help:

Start with a shorter stay. A one- or two-night stay before a longer trip lets your dog learn that you always come back. Many pet parents book a 'practice run' a few weeks before their actual vacation.

Consider a daycare visit first. Spending a day at the facility without the overnight component helps dogs build positive associations with the space, staff, and other dogs.

Talk to your vet about calming aids. For dogs with severe separation anxiety, veterinary-recommended calming supplements or medications can take the edge off. Start these several days before boarding so you can monitor for side effects. Have questions about your dog's specific needs? Contact our team and we'll walk you through it.

After Pick-Up: What to Expect

Don't be surprised if your dog is extra tired for a day or two after boarding — that's normal! They've been active, social, and stimulated in ways that are different from home life. Some dogs may also drink more water than usual or have slightly softer stools from excitement.

If your dog seems off for more than 48 hours after returning home, contact your veterinarian. But in most cases, a day of rest and normal routine is all they need to bounce back.
